1.Choose a white cup or a black cup.

2. Regarding the choice between narrow edges and wide edges

Personally, I would recommend choosing narrow borders. They are much more practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Narrow-edged downlights should fit the ceiling more closely and have no extra corners.

They are often used in minimalist styles and some modern styles that pursue details.

Wide-edge downlights are cheaper, but their wider borders look really out of place.

When installed on the ceiling, they look like patches, which is very unattractive.

3. Choose aluminium body or plastic body.

If the budget allows, definitely choose aluminum materials. They are safer

The heat dissipation of the aluminum cup body downlight is much stronger, and its service life is naturally longer. However, in terms of texture alone, it does feel different when held in hand, but there is not much difference after installation.
The biggest problem with plastic downlights is heat dissipation, which is much worse than that of aluminum ones. Considering durability, aluminum ones are naturally more suitable.

4. Choose a deep cup or a shallow cup

I decided to go for the deep cup. From my perspective, the shallow cup should be phased out.
To be honest, the shallow cup does look quite nice in some scenarios, but that's all. Its practicality is zero or even negative. The glare problem is simply unsolvable and it's very dazzling.

Deep cups do not have such problems. They can achieve the degree of seeing the light but not the lamp, ensuring illumination while also being less likely to be dazzled by the light.

5. How to select the color rendering index

In fact, whether it is a downlight or not, all lamps aim for a high color rendering index.

A color rendering index of over 90 is considered qualified by me, as it can roughly restore the original color of the object. However, a low color rendering index not only affects the color presentation but also, over time, can impact vision.
For those with a color rendering index below 80, I suggest you not even consider them. Over time, I feel that the objects they illuminate appear pale and oppressive.

6. How to read stroboscopic effect

Stroboscopic effects must be avoided as much as possible as they can cause too much harm to eyesight.
The way to avoid it is very simple. Just take out your phone and point it at the turned light. If there are many wave noise points in the camera at this time, it indicates that the flicker is severe. On the contrary, if the screen only has the light and no other changes, it can basically be determined that the flicker is qualified.

7. How to select the color temperature

Finally, I suggest choosing the color temperature according to different areas in your home as appropriate.
For instance, in the bedroom, we can choose warm tones with a lower color temperature. 3000K to 3500K would be quite suitable.

If the living room is in a warm and cozy wooden style, a warm white color under 4000K is fine. If it is in a modern and light luxury style, a cool color above 4000K can be chosen.

As for the kitchen, bathroom and dining room, downlights are generally not needed in the kitchen and bathroom. If there are, just apply the color temperature of the living room. It's best to use warm tones that are more like those in the bedroom for the dining room, which will make it more appetizing.
