Is track lighting AC or DC?

In the modern lighting industry, track lights have become a staple in shopping malls, exhibition halls, homes, and other settings, thanks to their flexible installation and precise lighting effects. However, many people wonder when installing or purchasing them: do track lights use alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC)? To answer this question, we need to look at the structure, power supply method, and working principle of track lights.
From the perspective of the power source, track lights are usually connected to AC power. The mains electricity we use in daily life is AC (220V, 50Hz in China). As the power carrier, the track of track lights is directly connected to the mains, so the electricity transmitted through the track is AC. This design has the advantage of strong adaptability—it can directly use the existing power grid without the need for additional high-voltage DC power lines, reducing installation and usage costs.
However, the core light-emitting component of track lights—the LED bulb—prefers DC power. LEDs are semiconductor devices, and their working principle determines that they can only emit light stably under the drive of direct current. If AC is applied directly, the periodic change in current direction will cause the LED to flicker frequently, which not only affects the lighting effect but also significantly shortens its service life.
This requires a "middleman" to reconcile the two—a driver power supply. The lamp head of track lights usually integrates an AC-DC conversion circuit (i.e., the driver power supply), which can convert the 220V AC transmitted through the track into low-voltage DC (common voltages are 12V, 24V, etc.) required by the LED. The driver power supply not only converts the current form but also stabilizes the output voltage and current, ensuring that the LED bulb works in the best condition and avoiding damage due to voltage fluctuations.
There are, however, some special cases. In some industrial or professional lighting scenarios, low-voltage DC track systems may be used. Such tracks themselves transmit DC power (e.g., 24V), and in this case, track lights can be directly connected to DC power without additional conversion circuits. But these cases are rare and are more commonly used in
environments with strict requirements for safe voltage (such as damp places and children's activity areas).
In summary, the power supply system of track lights is a typical case of "AC input and DC operation". The track, as a bridge for power transmission, carries AC power; while the driver power supply inside the lamp head completes the conversion from AC to DC, ultimately providing stable DC power for the LED bulb. Understanding this characteristic not only helps in the correct installation and maintenance of track lights but also allows for choosing suitable track light products according to the power form of the usage scenario when purchasing.
